UPDATE 09/09/2014: Janay Palmer, wife of Ray Rice, posted to a message on her Instagram today that defies logic and reeks of battered woman syndrome. Janay Palmer basically is telling the world that it should feel awful for the fact that we hate what Ray Rice did to her in that elevator. She goes on saying that if our goal was to “hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone, take all happiness away”, then we have succeeded. Forgive me if this doesn’t read a lot like her being mad that she’s now married to a man without a salary or hope for a career…
UPDATE 09/08/2014: Disgusting? Horrible? Criminal? What’s your adjective? They’re all right when it comes to this one.
After TMZ released video of then Ray Rice’s girlfriend, now Ray Rice’s wife Janay Rice getting a vicious left hook to the face, the world exploded and demanded responsibility be taken. The NFL and Baltimore Ravens denied having ever seen the video before the TMZ footage went public, but took steps, albeit late steps, to rectify the situation.
The Baltimore Ravens cut him.
The NFL has suspended him indefinitely.
The Atlantic City DA still seems content with the agreed plea deal to Pre Trial Intervention, which in light of the video seems increasingly egregious. The world is happy to see the punishment meted out to Rice, but it seems like an afterthought to know how Rice’s wife Janay is doing through this.
While cutting Rice was almost the only possible outcome, let’s not forget how the Ravens initially tackled this one. During the farce of a press conference put on by the ever-classless Ravens organization (how’s that Ray Lewis statue doing?), the Ravens were sure to Tweet out, “Janay Rice deeply regrets the role that she played in the night of the incident.” While the Tweet was removed, the Ravens can rest peacefully knowing that we all know the victim is sorry for getting her face in the way.
Color us skeptical that Rice ever suits up in the NFL again. Color us content if that is the final outcome.
UPDATE 05/20/2014: Over before it began.
Ray Rice has struck a deal with prosecution in the pending domestic assault charges, which will see Rice serve no jail time. Rice was accepted into a pretrial intervention program which allows him the opportunity to seek a set of rehabilitation conditions in order to avoid prosecution. Rice must stay out of trouble for a year and if he satisfies other conditions of program the charges will be dropped.
For a guy that stayed out of trouble for the first few years of his NFL career, we imagine we’ll see nothing but the straight and narrow till May, 2015.
UPDATE 05/01/2014: Ray Rice’s wife Janay Palmer walked together into a courthouse where Rice plead not guilty to charges of assault stemming from an incident in an Atlantic City casino with Palmer. Reports indicate Rice has been offered a plea deal with probation and no jail time. Rice’s next court date is scheduled for May 29th.
UPDATE 03/28/2014 According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, things have quickly turned for a better in this relationship.
Meet Ray Rice’s wife Janay Palmer.
Despite charges filed against Rice for the altercation at an Atlantic City casino in February, the ceremony had been planned for a couple weeks. While no confirmation from Rice has taken place, it may be a well timed move to help in the pending charges against him. If Palmer invokes spousal privileges, she will not have to testify against Rice in court. Despite initial presumptions, spousal privilege will not apply here. As the incident took placein New Jersey before the couple was married, this cannot be invoked and Palmer may be required to testify.
There’s clearly a lot going on for these two and hopefully married life helps calm things down for the couple. We’ll keep an eye on further developments as they come.
Normally we’d end with a congratulations – but this time we’ll hold that until we have further details.
UPDATE 03/27/2014: Ray Rice was indicted today on one count of third degree aggravated assault for the incident involving his fiancee Janay Palmer at an Atlantic City casino.
The February incident caught major media coverage when surveillance footage captured Rice dragging a limp bodied Palmer out of an elevator. The charge brought today is a felony with a punishment of up to 3 to 5 years of prison.
Charges initially brought against Janay Palmer have been dropped by prosecutors.
02/20/2014 UPDATE: By now, most of you have heard about the altercation involving Ray Rice and girlfriend Janay Palmer.
In the early morning, February 15, Rice and Palmer were involved in an incident with both individuals assaulting the other. In a complaint filed by Atlantic City police, Rice was alleged to have been “attempting to cause bodily injury to J. Palmer specifically by striking her with his hand, rendering her unconscious.” Deadspin has reported that Rice allegedly threw and landed an uppercut on Palmer knocking her out in a single shot. TMZ obtained and posted footage of Rice attempting to drag a visibly unconscious Palmer from a casino elevator, which can also be seen below.
In a matching complaint, AC police filed a report against Ray Rice’s fiance Janay Palmer, again reporting that she attempted to cause bodily injury to Rice by striking him with her hand. Both Rice and Palmer were charged with domestic violence charges and are due in court February 26. Ravens officials have made no comment on the situation other than to acknowledge it’s existence and refuse to speculate further until additional details are known.
In our original post below the video, we learned that this wasn’t Janay Palmer’s first run in with the law, having previously been charged with shoplifting.
Ray Rice’s girlfriend Janay Palmer has been in the picture since 2008, though that timeline is hazy. The two are reportedly living together, and a number of reports online indicate that Ray Rice and Janay Palmer are engaged to be married. However, it’s interesting to note that on Janay’s Facebook page, she lists her favorite athlete as Michael Oher…. Are Ray and Janay history? Or does she just like the guy opening lanes for Ray more? Did she really, really like The Blind Side? You tell us…
In August, 2010, Ray Rice’s girlfriend was arrested for, and pled guilty to, shoplifting. The charge was for stealing a dress valued at less than $1,000. MediaTakeOut got ahold of the police report, and also learned that Janay was given probation, and a fine of $400 for her crime. They also cite an “inside source” who claims that she was busted for shoplifting a dress to hit the clubs with that evening. That has not been corroborated. Either way, it seems ridiculous that the girlfriend of a multi-million dollar athelete would have to steal anything.
