Tyreek Hill’s girlfriend Crystal Espinal was the victim of in the domestic abuse case against the star Wide Receiver. This happened in 2014 while Hill was playing at Oklahoma. He ultimately pled guilty to the charges, and “was given a three-year deferred sentence with probation and required to complete an anger management course along with a 52-week batterer’s intervention program”. The NFL seems like the ideal place for criminals to avoid consequences. This is like the eighteen-millionth example of an abusive guy getting off the hook. It’s very common. Amazingly in 2016, the ever image conscious NFL decides to plaster his image on the front of their Twitter homepage. Their message is clear: if you have enough talent, it doesn’t matter if you strangle pregnant women. However, if you smoke weed, that’s like the worst thing ever. It’s a weird and wacky place- the NFL.
Of course, fans hate when you mention the hypocrisy of the league. Everybody makes mistakes, right? Well, yes, but if you are in the NFL the consequences aren’t exactly proportionate if you are a good player on the field. The media seized on the incident to make Hill an example of why the league is messed up. Hill himself says he is a changed man because he takes therapy sessions. Based on the testimony Tyreek Hill’s girlfriend gave, it will take a lot of therapy to turn him into an actual normal person.
The guy tossed her out of his apartment when he saw some messages on her phone. Since she didn’t have enough clothes to leave, she had to go back inside to get some. Then, Tyreek punched her in the face and choked her. He sounds like the perfect guy to represent the league! Let’s put him on the front page of the league’s Twitter! He said sorry and he is “dedicated” and wants to be a better man. As long as he puts up big numbers on the field, the league thinks it’s all fine and dandy. I wonder what Tyreek Hill’s ex-girlfriend thinks when she gets the checks in the mail?
But, time heals all wounds.
In 2018, Tyreek moved Espinal and their son Zev to Kansas City. And shortly thereafter, Tyreek Hill’s girlfriend became Tyreek Hill’s wife. The speed receiver dropped to one knee and proposed. In fairness, Hill did complete his three year deferred sentence, and all other court orders. If the therapy paid off, and the couple can make it work, I suppose all the more power to them?
