If the Colts are looking for help next year on the O-Line to protect Andrew Luck I think we have found the answer. (and we’re not being insulting… the star high school football player once told the New York Times very plainly, “I like to hit people.”)
Many of you know Nick Mangold, star center of the NY Jets. Very soon Nick will be taking a backseat to his sister Holley. Holley is a 22-year-old 300 pound sister of Nick and she just qualified for the US Olympic weightlifting team as a super heavy weight in two events, the snatch and the clean-and-jerk. Most thought that Holley would be a 2016 Olympic hopeful but Holley shocked a lot of people and qualified this year. A long shot to medal (no US woman has medaled since 2000). Even though she may not medal, there’s no denying her power. Holley was involved in a serious car accident in 2007 which totaled the truck she was driving. Holley escaped with no significant injuries as upon impact she shoved the steering wheel away from her body breaking the wheel and leaving it a crumpled mass of what it once was. That’s a strong woman right there.
Holley began her training much like her brother did, on the football field. At an early age and with her size her parents signed Holley up to play football. She continued to play all throughout highschool. Eventually with her size and past experience weighlifting for football it seemed a natural fit that Holley work towards a goal of the Olympic team.
Even if she does not medal Holley very well could become one of the faces of the Olympic games. She has already gotten a lot of press from her high school days due to her connection with Nick, and has been featured on both “MTV True Life,” and “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.” While currently we don’t believe she has a boyfriend she did mention on “Real Sports” what type of guy she would be looking for:
“I don’t like to be the strong one in a relationship. Guys who proposition you on Facebook want you to be an Amazon woman … and they’re really small. The way I see it, if you’re 5-7 and weigh 120 pounds, we’re not gonna make it.”
Interesting note, despite getting the blessing from head coach Rex Ryan, Nick will not attend the Olympics to watch his sister. The Olympics will occur during the start of training camp for the Jets and Nick does not want to leave the team after the year they had last year.
